Our History & Name Origin
By the 20th century, the mills and fisheries were sold, and the family redirected its efforts to ensure the legacy endured for future generations. Six generations later, Jon Frederick Bicking’s great-great-great-great-grandson, David E. Kennedy II, was instrumental in steering the family’s endeavors into the 21st century, shifting the focus toward business services, solutions, and asset management.
Today, the legacy continues under the leadership of Bicking’s descendants, with his 6x -great-grandson, Wm. (Wil) Kennedy Buhler, currently serving as Managing Partner and guiding the family and firm's ongoing growth and evolution at JF Bicking & Co.
The origins of JF Bicking & Co. date back to 1762 when Jon Frederick Bicking, a German immigrant, established a paper mill in Philadelphia. His mill played a pivotal role in the American Revolution, producing paper for government documents, including currency used to pay troops at Valley Forge. Over time, Bicking's operations expanded to include sawmills and fisheries, creating a multi-generational family legacy passed down to his sons. Successive generations carried this entrepreneurial spirit into the 19th century and beyond.
